The American comic book as we know it today is very different from its humble beginnings as described in the Wikipedia entry for American Comic Books. It is believed that the first of what we would consider to be a comic can be dated back as far as 1833. These were very different to the later more familiar style of comic, which arose in 1897.
The book known as ‘The Yellow Kid in McFadden’s Flats’ was also the first to reference itself as a ‘comic book’ on the back cover. Over the coming decades there were a few releases of a similar style to this proto comic book with many companies creating comic book strips as free promotional material to encourage consumers to buy their product.
The comic book as we know it today developed over several decades, which are often referred to as the comic book ‘Ages’. In this website we will be looking at these development of styles and characters and some of the big players in the world of American comic books and also how the American comic book relates in the publishing world today.
