The Horror genre was a surprising success in the 1950’s with comics released that were aimed to target a far more adult orientated market. EC Comics released their ‘Tales from the Crypt’, ‘The Haunt of Fear’ and ‘The Vault of Horror’ series of comics. These releases came under substantial attack from parents, teachers and the church and were to contribute to the Congressional Subcommittee Hearings on the effect of these comics on child literacy and juvenile behavior.
The Crypt Keeper was the host of the comic and would introduce short stories intended to scare the reader. In later years their would be several reprints of the series as the popularity continued to this day. The previously mentioned committee hearings contributed greatly to the death of the series, as they were not perceived as being suitable for young adults to read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_from_the_Crypt_(comic)
